Landscape

January, 2016

The students create two very different landscape masterpieces.  One is a study on foreground, middle ground, and background.  Each section is divided with a dried glue line to give some relief to the paper, then it's painted with watercolor.  The other mixed media piece focuses on a winter theme with birch trees in the middle ground, teeny-tiny images on the horizonline in the background, and a large, colorful bird in the foreground.

Texture!

As a culmination of our texture unit, the students use Vincent Van Gogh's sunflowers to create amazing mixed-media masterpieces.  Notice the textured wall background, textured table, scratch art vase, fuzzy yarn stems, felt centers, and bumpy patterned petals.  http://www.vangoghmuseum

'Tis the season of pumpkins!  During our texture unit, we learn about many kinds of textures in art.  Our pumpkins show a few types of visual texture with paint (glittery, glossy, smooth, rough).  The second layer of texture is from thrings we found around the art room (sponges, combs, forks, q-tips, cardboard, etc.)  We finish with a tad of puffy glitter on the vine, because, let's be honest, what first grade artist doesn't love glitter?

Our pendants are so cool, we kind of don't want to tell you how we made them.  Let's just say it was a stomping good time!
