Graphic Design Letter Sculptures

January, 2016

Fourth graders designed their own font, enlarged it proportionally, and cut our all of their letters on cardboard.  Using gel sticks, each student chooses a theme that shows unity either among the color choice or the pattern choice.  The letters become abstract when transformed into a sculpture with a reflective base.

Radial Symmetry: Mandalas

October 12, 2015

The word mandala is thought to come from an old Indian language and loosely translate to mean circle.  A mandala typically has radial symmetry which is an advanced form of symmetry that my fourth graders now understand and LOVE (as do I)!  Our mandalas begin on simple paper with folds and basic line/shape designs. Through a series of steps, each design transforms into a mandala.  When complete, the artist turns his/her awesome design into a faux stained glass piece of art.

"I AM" (Self Portraits in Words)

September 16, 2015

As the first piece of artwork for the year, I like to think of these as self portraits with words instead of pictures. The color is from watercolor crayons, believe it or not - super duper fun stuff - almost like magic!
