This unit is lengthly and detailed.  It's filled with experiments, ah-ha moments, and fun!  We enjoy stations with color mixing opportunities including:

 - science experiments like vinegar/baking soda eruptions

 - symmetry practice with folded paper

 - painted hand shakes with friends

 - experiments with sand, oil, and salt

 - "Mouse Paint" inspired sculpture with model magic

 - Rainbow roller coasters

 - Visit the gallery page for images of our experiments!

Circles!

December 15, 2015

We trace circles, draw circles, cut circles, shade circles, and glue circles.  Our ariel view snowmen are all about the circle.  There are many more elements to this piece: batik, relief, decorative design, and texture.

Shapes!

November 16, 2015

Shape is a fun element of design because some of our shapes have names, and some of our shapes are wiggly waggly or jagged.  These mobiles consist of 4 common shapes with names and "rules."  There are squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles painted with bright colors.  We even added the element of movement when they hang from the ceiling like Alexander Calder's mobiles.  http://www.calder.org

Lines!

October 12, 2015

These must be the biggest hamburgers you've ever seen! My young artists study line with scissors for this lesson. You should see straight lines, curvy lines, zigzag lines, and more!

October 3, 2015

Of the 7 main elements of design, LINE is one of the most basic and most important.  We study all kinds of lines. Straight, wavy, zig-zag, thick, thin, vertical, horizontal, and free form.  We practice lines with our bodies using some kinesthetic learning as well as in our sketchbooks for the more visual learners.  We listen to videos and watch others artists draw lines and use lines in the artwork. Here are some samples of Eastover kindergarten artists and their LINE artwork.

Our First Week Together

September 12, 2015

My kindergartners are learning the ropes here in Eastover's Art Studio.  We read the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds and created our own individual dots to be "framed in swirly gold" just like Vashti's dot from the book.  Come by the gallery to see our very first masterpieces.
